Identification (ID) Document Changes
NAMES, PRONOUNS, & SEX/GENDER ON ID DOCUMENTS

If you have a specific pronoun and name that you wish others to use to identify you, that should be respected.

Identification documents such as a birth certificate, social security card, passport, driver's license, and school records (among other documents) have a "M" for male or "F" for female to signify one's sex. If this sex/gender marker or your birth name no longer reflects your sex, gender identity and/or gender expression you may consider having them formally changed. Not everyone chooses to change their birth name or the sex/gender marker on their identification documents, though many do because it more accurately reflects who they are, and also to help avoid issues of discrimination and harassment. Depending on where you were born, as well as where you currently live, you may or may not be able to change all of your identity documents. Below are a number of resources and organizations you can contact for guidance, help, and to answer any questions you may have.
